Renewable Energy in California.

We have all become aware that the threat of climate change is no joke; extreme temperatures, uncontrollable fires, droughts and floods are evidence and an indicator that things are going to get worse if we don’t act now. As a California, you can be proud that you are living in a state that wants to beat, not meet, the goals set in the Paris Agreement. Climate change also causes huge pressures on the grid, especially in a heatwave, when everyone switches their air conditioners on, and, predictably, power failures will become more common. Moving to renewable energy is one way to be a California active citizen, as well as giving you some control over your electricity supply as an energy prosumer.

The renewable energy outlook for California has just been given a boost by Governor Gavin Newsom’s announcement that the state wants to accelerate their target to meet the Net Zero carbon neutrality by 2035, 15 years ahead of the Paris Agreement. California has always been very progressive in encouraging the transition to renewable energy, especially renewable energy. There are 7 state and nation-wide incentives available to assist consumers in particular to install a renewable energy solution. However, some of these incentives were initiated when renewable energy was quite expensive and some of the incentives will be reduced or discontinued in the future, which makes it wise to take the leap into renewable energy now. One incentive in particular is net metering, which allows you to sell surplus electricity back to the grid. While net metering (or wheeling) is here to stay, the amount that the State is prepared to pay will be reduced. The graphs below are from a report by Bloomberg and Schneider Electric, illustrating the effect of a reduction in net-metering pricing.

Where new houses are being constructed, California requires renewable energy PV to be installed. This has a benefit to the installer, as they do not have to sell the installation to the homeowner. In the same report, Bloomberg estimates that there is a cost savings of approximately 40% on installations for a new home as against a retrofit (installing on an existing property).

A major game-changer in renewable energy, and the energy sector in general, is the increasing affordability of batteries and it makes sense to install a battery for your renewable energy home (of course, if you have an electric vehicle, this will naturally be part of the installation. It also reduces your dependence on the grid, because you can use your stored energy rather than purchasing from your local utility. This will become increasingly important as suppliers start introducing time-of-use (TOU) or changing the pricing on an existing TOU scheme.

CCalifornia have voted for 100% clean energy in California by 2030

California implemented a stretch target in 2018 to reach Net Zero (carbon neutrality) in 2045, five years ahead of the Paris Agreement milestone of 2050, making it a clean energy leader in the US and globally.

The target has been updated to reach Net Zero by 2035 in July 2021, in line with President Biden’s stretch target of 100% clean energy by 2035.

Renewable energy is becoming so prevalent and economical in California that GE has been forced to close its 750-megawatt natural-gas-fired plant, known as the Inland Empire Energy Center, 20 years early. The plant will be sold and repurposed to make batteries for renewable energy storage.

Climate action creates jobs and attracts investment. GDP has increased 21% over the last 5 years, thanks to the growth in cleantech.

Electric vehicles are now the state’s top export, supporting 275,000 direct jobs with an average wage of $91,000 - thus boosting the demand for solar-powered battery installations.
